Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known as Queen Latifah is an American performer and actress. Her performance as a singer, music actor, filmmaker and TV performer has earned the actress two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also received an Grammy Award along with six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah's parents are Lancelot as well as Rita Owens. Both were Police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who taught at Irvington High School. Latifah's mother and father divorced when Latifah turned ten. Latifah was born and raised within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. In her early twenties, her cousin gave her stage names Latifah, which means delicate and kind in Arabic. Being a tall girl, at 5'10, Latifah was a forward for the basketball team at her high school. She performed the hit song home from The Wiz at a high-school play. Latifah was a beatboxer in The Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah is among the founding members of the Flavor Unit, which was at that time a collective of MCs around DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King recorded a rendition of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. He handed the recording over to Yo! MTV Raps is Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music who was working for Latifah in the early days and was awed by the single. In 1988, she dropped Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's debut single.
